This 3,922-acre lake is located just outside Augusta, Maine’s capital city. The wide variety of species present makes China Lake a popular destination for Maine anglers. Hilly farmland and lakeside camps ring the shoreline, and the lake has a maximum depth of 85 feet. The shoreline may be crowded in springtime, during the white perch run, but boaters rarely experience crowded conditions. China Lake offers fishing from boats or canoes, or from the shore. Lodging is available at various motels on Maine Route 3 between Augusta and South China. China Lake is a 54 square mile area in central Maine located along Highway 37 near the town of Winslow. The China Lakes region consists of four villages; China, South China, Weeks Mills and Branch Mills. It also has three bodies of water, which are China Lake, Three-Mile Pond and Branch Pond. This is an exceptionally tranquil area of Maine with rolling hills, picturesque farms, crystal clear lakes, ponds and streams, and bustling small towns. Fishing is excellent in the China Lakes region where you can fish for landlocked salmon, small mouth bass and white perch. The nearby town of Winthrop has 12 lakes and ponds within its boundaries and is another favorite among fishermen and vacationers. Other outdoor fun besides fishing is swimming, hiking, biking, picnicking, antiqueing, and sightseeing along Maine’s historic, picturesque country roads. A number of children’s summer camps are located among the many small lakes in the China Lakes region. Centrally located between the capital city of Augusta and the villages along Maine’s midcoast region, China Lakes has become a favorite draw for people of all ages. this lake hold many fishing tounaments.
