Crystal Pond ( Beals Pond ) Description

Principal fisheries: Brown trout, brook trout, smallmouth
bass, chain pickerel
Crystal Pond, also known as Beals Pond, drains to
Martin Stream a major tributary to the Nezinscot River.
Anglers can access this small pond via a small unimproved
launch located off State Route 4 on the west shore. This
launch site is only suitable for small boats and canoes.
Heavy competition from warm water sport fish and
marginal water quality make management of cold water
sportfish difficult. Brown trout arc better suited to surviveunder these conditions. The lack of suitable spawning and
nursery habitat dictates the necessity of annual stockings to
maintain the fishery.
Recent improvements to the Department's hatchery
system have provided additional fish for stocking. The
stocking of legal-size brook trout into Crystal Pond is a
result of these improvements. Brook trout are stocked in
the spring to provide fast fishing in the early summer.
These trout are not expected to survive through the hot
summer months due to the poor water quality and
therefore an additional fall stocking is needed to provide
the winter angler with the opportunity to catch brook trout.
Crystal Pond also provides fishing for several
warmwater species. Fast fishing for bass, white perch and
pickerel can be expected for those who actively pursue
them. In 2000, northern pike were first observed,
undoubtedly, the result of an illegal introduction. Should
pike become well established they would have dire impacts
on the other warm water sportfish.
