Historically, a small self sustaining brook trout fishery was maintained in Iron Pond, but with an increasing number of beaver dams on the inlet stream and increasing fishing pressure, natural reproduction failed to provide adequate numbers of trout for the angler. A brook trout stocking program was initiated and continued for many years until it was determined that adequate brook trout habitat was not available.
A brown trout stocking program began in 1993 with the introduction of 50 10-12 inch fall yearlings. Brown trout stocked in other central Maine waters with similar water quality fair better than stocked brook trout under these conditions.
The small size of Iron Pond dictates that only a very low number of brown trout can be stocked, therefore, anglers should expect low catch rates but should have the opportunity to catch larger than average size fish.
