Maine's coastal rivers often hold large sea run brown trout and the Ogunquit River is one of the best, if trickiest, examples. While much of the river (between I-95 and Route 1) is artificial-lure-only through August, the more coastal stretch become wonderful water for fly-fishing striped bass. The current brown trout bag limit is two trout at least 12 inches, and as with many brown trout fisheries, the larger most tempting fish (5-pounders) you will see are the wisest and hardest to catch. Even seasoned anglers become frustrated here, and this river requires a great deal of local knowledge The Ogunquit River watershed covers approximately 20 square miles. The river discharges into the Ogunquit estuary behind a 2.5-mile-long beach. Its estuary accommodates many recreational uses, including swimming, recreational fishing, canoeing, kayaking and bird watching.
