Principal fisheries: Smallmouth bass, white perch, chain pickerel
Taylor Pond is a heavily developed pond located in the City of Auburn. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife discontinued brown trout stocking in 1989 due to inadequate public access, and poor returns to the angler. Brown trout require cool, well-oxygenated water during the summer months. Although the water below 20 feet is cool in the summer, it lacks sufficient dissolved oxygen to support many brown trout. Additionally, high populations of perch and bass compete extensively with brown trout for food.
An abundance of rocky, gravelly shores serve as excellent spawning and nursery areas for smallmouth bass, which were introduced in the early 1940’s. Large populations of white perch, yellow perch, sunfish, and other minnows provide forage for the bass.
Anadromous alewives are stocked each year by the Department of Marine Resources in an effort to restore runs of these fish to the Androscoggin River.
Public access to Taylor Pond is available only by permissive trespass, since there is not a public access site. Purchasing and developing public access to this pond is a priority of this department.
