Nearby North Shapleigh Pond was stocked with largemouth bass fingerlings in 1960. A short thoroughfare connects Hansen and
North Shapleigh ponds, and has enabled largemouth bass to also establish in Hansen Pond.
Black crappie were first confirmed in the drainage in 1970, when an
illegally established population was discovered in Balch Lake. Crappies have since established elsewhere in the drainage, including North Shapleigh (confirmed 1978). Because Hansen Pond and North Shapleigh Pond are connected it is probable that crappies are also
present in Hansen Pond.
Angler access is restricted to permissive trespass and there is a need
to develop public access to this water.
