Square Pond, which is located in western York County, has long been noted as one of Maine's premier brown trout lakes. This water also supports a variety of warmwater fisheries. The extensive rocky, gravelly shoreline serves as excellent spawning and nursery habitat for
smallmouth bass. Also, abundant populations of white perch, yellow perch, sunfish, and other minnows provide forage for both brown trout and bass.
Landlocked alewives were introduced by the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW)in 1983 to provide the principal forage for brown trout. The introduction was successfu~j brown
trout and other warmwater gamefish have utilized the alewives and exhibited excellent growth. In 1996, the state record brown trout (23 pounds 8 ounces) was caught by an ice fisherman, and
numerous brown trout ranging from 5 to 12 pounds have also been reported. In 1992, MDIFW was forced to discontinue stocking due to a lack of suitable public access to the pond. As a result, recent
reports of larger brown trout have declined. Since that time this department has aggressively worked
toward purchasing and developing public access to the pond. Hopefully, all efforts will be rewarded and brown trout will be stocked in Square Pond once again.
